Reduction Mastoplasty

Mamoplastia reductora

The reduction mastoplasty or breast reduction surgery is used to reduce the size of the breasts by removing excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue, providing aesthetic harmony according to the physical type, in terms of size, shape, and position. This type of surgery is indicated in cases of mammary hypertrophy (very large breasts) that over time have ptosis (sagging breasts). These may result in an extensive set of symptoms, mainly affecting the spinal column´s osteoarticular system (pain, poor posture). Patients might also have difficulty breathing and psychological disorders. In some cases, it may be recommended as complementary to the prophylactic treatment of some breast diseases. This surgical procedure can be performed from the age of 16 or in some special cases in adolescents between 12 and 15 years of age. These cases are medically recommended and done under psychological evaluation.

Physical exercise and sun exposure involving arms or chest are recommended 3 months after having undergone surgery.

The results can be seen in the first 30 days, however, the breasts reach their final appearance in 6 to 12 months, in terms of scars, shape, volume, consistency, and sensitivity. It is important to know that each patient has a different breast format, with asymmetries and congenital or acquired deformities, requiring individualized indication and treatment.
